The Sky Was The Limit At WGR

Super Late Model drivers showed they really know how to get things done Saturday at the Wyant Group Raceway. At the start of any long race they get a little pep talk. Things like, remember it’s a long race; be patient; you have lots of time; you’ll never win it on the first lap, but you may lose it. Does it do any good? Who knows, but it is tradition.

Maybe it did help on Saturday. It was the final race of the season for the Sky Financial Super Late Model Series, the DJB Transportation 150.
Taking the green flag at 5:31pm, they drove 129 laps before they saw their first caution. And what’s more, they saw caution only once more, on the restart lap of the first caution.

That doesn’t leave a lot of stats, but it doesn’t mean it wasn’t and exciting and action packed race.

The 12x of Aaron Deagnon was on the pole, with #04 Tim Kammer outside.
Six rows back, at the back, were the top qualifiers, #55 Jim Gaunt and
#17 Rob Janzen. Nine more cars were in between for the fourth and final race of the season for the series.

The green flag drops and Deagon takes the lead, showing the way around for three laps before #9 of Ian Admiraal moves up from the second row to take over the lead. It looked easy, but Matthew Shirley wanted to show he was worthy of his move from Sportsman to SLM and by lap 19 had taken over the lead from Admiraal.

By lap 20 we had seen movement through the field. #62 of Kenny Heintz had moved from an eighth spot start to fourth. Kevin Dyck had piloted the #10 up four positions into fifth. The #55 of Gaunt and #70 of Seidel were biding their time though, hanging back with only two cars behind them.

Patience? Saving their tires? They’ll never tell you their game plan.

At lap 50 things hadn’t changed much. It was still 12, 9, 62 and 10 at the front. 55 and 70 were up a couple more spots, clearing by 17x of Trevor Emond and 99 of Dean Braham. This seemed to be new strategy for Emond as well, hanging back so long. We’re used to seeing him charge to the front.

At the half way point Gaunt had slipped back a little more. Matthew Shirley continued to lead, with lapped cars mixed in Admiraal was still second, Kevin Dyck was third and Seidel had inched up to fourth.

At lap 83 Shirley came up on the #62 of Kenny Heintz, looking to put him a lap down. Kenny was having no part of that and raced hard. There was no way Matthew was getting by him. It wasn’t until lap 95 that Shirley was finally able to clear by Heintz and he now set his sights on Rob Janzen.

Shirley was trying to find an opening on Janzen. Heintz hadn’t given up on Shirley either, continuing to dog him in his rear view mirror.
Coming out of corner four in lap 108 Matthew managed to work his way inside of the #17 of Janzen. They made contact though and Shirley’s right tire rode over Janzen’s left wheel.

Heintz took advantage, driving around both and landing back on the lead lap. No liquid Lucky Bastard for Kenny tonight! No caution either.

The #12 of Shirley continued to lead, but his times did slow and he soon found #70 of Trent Seidel knocking on his back door. Lap 123 Seidel clears by Shirley and becomes the fourth leader of the race.

Lap 129 Kevin Dyck and Kenny Heintz get together bringing out the first caution of the race. Both have to pit for repairs. Kenny gets back in while still under caution, but Kevin pulls into his pit. The #38 of Dave Bone is the Lucky Bastard recipient, putting him back on the lead lap.

For the restart, Seidel and Shirley were on the front row, with Admiraal and Gaunt on the second row. Seidel drives away on green with Admiraal close behind. Coming through corner three and four, Admiraal gets into the back of Seidel bringing the caution lights back on for only the second time.

Admiraal taps out (takes responsibility for the accident) so is moved to the back. Otherwise, the cars are relined into the positions there were on the restart since they had not completed the first lap. This puts Gaunt on the inside behind Seidel and Emond outside behind Shirley.

Green comes out and Seidel drives away with Emond in chase. Shirley is running about 3/10th of a second slower that the leaders. Jim moves around him into third and continues his chase on Seidel and Emond.

Trent has gone into coast mode as he lets Jim and Trevor battle behind him. Trent is running 15 seconds laps while Trevor is turning 14.9.
Gaunt is a little faster at 14.8’s, but there just isn’t enough time.
The checkered flag comes out less than 48 minutes after the green flag, with the #70 Elance Steel Chevy SS of Trent Seidel in first, #17x Western Camp Services Chevy of Trevor Emond second and the #55 Sky Financial Chevy of Jim Gaunt in third.

After a disastrous first race in the series on June 18, the Astro Towing
150 won by Trevor Emond, Trent came back to win the second race, the Dairy Queen Mark McGreggor Memorial 150 on August 8. Trent had to settle for third in the Lakeview Insurance 150 on August 27 leaving #8x Kelly Admiraal to win that one.

Even though he didn’t take any checkered flags home, the steady finishes of 2nd, 4th, 2nd and 3rd was enough to keep Jim Gaunt at the top of the points chase with 325 points. #10 Trent Seidel is second with 310 points and #17 of Rob Janzen is third with 293 points. #17x Trevor Emond at 285 and rookie #12 Matthew Shirley at 249 round out the top five.

We really thought we were going to see some record times Saturday as Trent Seidel put down a lap time of 13.971 in practice on Friday afternoon. That is the first time a car has run a recorded sub 14 second lap at Wyant Group Raceway.

He bettered that time Saturday morning in practice, putting a 13.961 second lap on the board. Unfortunately, neither time counts in the record books as they were not run under the controls of qualifying time trials and the car was not tech’d immediately following the timing.

Once the clock started, the best we saw was 14.212 seconds out of the
#17 of Rob Janzen and 14.273 out of #55 Jim Gaunt. Trent’s official time was third place at 14.319 seconds.

Trent also won the first heat race, giving him pole position for the DJB Transportation 150 before inversion. #10 Kevin Dyck was second and #17 Rob Janzen was third.

Trevor Emond took the second heat win with the #62 of Kenny Heintz second and #55 Jim Gaunt third.

As top qualifiers, Jim and Rob both chose to take the challenge to start at the back, today up to $1500.00. The dice roll was eleven, meaning the whole field was inverted for the start of the 150.

There was plenty of other racing as well Saturday at Wyant Group Raceway. The Golf’s Car Wash Mini Stocks were running their second last race of the season. It was the #4 Streetwise Service Honda Prelude Shawn Magee, Shawn Magee and Shawn Magee winning the heat, qualifier and mini stock feature.

Jim Barnsley’s Streetwise Service #41 Neon was second in the heat and qualifier, third in the feature. Cole Nixey in the #23 33rd Street Auto Prelude was third in the heat and qualifier, second in the feature.

The Golf’s Car Wash Mini Stocks will finish their season next Saturday, Jim Barnsley holding a seven point lead over Cole Nixey. Its another nine points to Magee.

The Golf’s Car Wash Street Stocks finished up their race season Saturday with #3 Craig Katelnikoff winning the first heat. Curtis Houben in the
#81 RPM Camaro won the qualifier and the street stock feature. #63 Kevin Mclaggen was second, and the #22 Globe Excavating Camaro of Ryan Fredrickson was third. A finishing lap feud down the front stretch in into the grass between the #3 of Craig Katelnikoff and #18 Mike Rea earned them both black flags.

The wins Saturday puts the #81 RPM Camaro of Curtis Houben back on top of the points for the year, winning the season with 586 points over the
#3 BDI Trans Am of Craig Katelnikoff with 563 points. Mike Rea winds up third with 562 points in the #18 Wheaton GM Monte Carlo.

Ryan Thompson didn’t have a good ending to his season in the Shell V-Power Nitro Plus Sportsman division. His day ended early when Nicole Sheetka bounced off Kirk Senger through corner four and Sheetka went into Ryan, turning him hard into the wall.

Cale Siemens ended up winning that first Sportsman heat race, with #5 Kirk Senger second and #42 Nicole Sheetka third. #51x Nick Jewel picked up the second heat race, with #93 Neil Schneider second and #51 Matt Neufeld third.

Nick Jewel also picked up the first qualifier win, Neil Schneider second and #28 Cale Siemens third. Nicole Sheetka took the second qualifier, with the #27 of Rick Schurmanns second and #49 Ben Busch third.

It was 50 laps for the final race of the season for the Shell V-Power Nitro Plus Sportsman division and the #51x of Nick Jewel was first to the line. Neil Scheider was second in the #93 Burco Electric Dodge Avenger. Nicole Sheetka in the #42 Rainbow International Restoration Grand Prix was third. Nick Jewel’s car did not pass tech inspection, so was DQ’d.

That ends the season with the #28 Lucky Bastard Distillers Grand Prix winning the Shell V-Power Nitro Plus Sportsman championship with 286 points. Ben Busch in the #49 Northern Lights Casino Monte Carlo is second with 269 points and Neil Schneider is third in the #93 Burco Electric Dodge Avenger with 259 points.

The Sky Financial Series race also finished up the season for the WSSL Super Late Model Division, who has points calculated out of the Sky Financial series races. Finishing at the top of the points chart for the WSSL Auto Parts Super Late Model Division is #17 J&A Heating and Plumbing Chevy of Rob Janzen with 259 points.

Second in WSSL Auto Parts SLM points is #12, the Saskatoon Co-op Chevy SS of Matthew Shirley with 249 points and in third, Kenny Heintz, driving the #62 Floorit Monte Carlo with 246 points.

Next weekend wraps up the race season at Wyant Group Raceway. Saturday will see the Golf’s Car Wash Mini Stocks, the Saskatoon Shrine Club Sask Legends, the Law Enforcement Guardian Bandoleros and the Tiger Automotive Pro Trucks running their championship points finals.

Sunday is destruction day, with the Annual Ultimate Enduro, Run-Your-Junk heats and feature, and finishing the day and season up with an old fashioned smash up, the Ultimate Demolition Derby.

Gates open both Saturday and Sunday September 24 and 25 at 12:30, with racing action starting both days at 2:05pm. See you there!
