Some of Dis N’ Dat To Wrap Up The Week:

Well what a week it was in the world of sports… Here’s my take on some of Dis N’ Dat….

Grass Genie: How about Eugenie Bouchard at Wimbledon. She has become the first Canadian to reach the final in singles at a grand slam! Pretty cool stuff. Perhaps the more dominant statistic is that the only female to have advanced to the semi-finals in all three grand slams this year!

Point For Milos: Yes Milos Raonic is now on the clock as he is set for his semi-final match. It’s funny how perception changes. If you had told the average sports fan that he would make it to the semi-finals at the All-England club most would be satisfied. However, now with the success of Bouchard it seems that public perception of his accomplishment will change if he doesn’t advance to the final.

Capital Notion: Well for the first time in 3,163 days football fans in Ottawa had a chance to cheer on their team. The REDBLACKS first ever game was played in Winnipeg last night. Unfortunately the expansion team could not hold on to an early 21-7 lead to make it a Cinderella story, but there were some positives for the REDBLACKS to build on.

What the heck? That’s what the Winnipeg Blue Bombers must have been saying when they saw the 2014 CFL schedule come out. The Bombers inexplicably have been saddled with two Thursday night home games to open the season. Albeit to a lesser extent the Bombers do rely on fans to commute to Winnipeg for CFL football just like the Roughriders. Hence the empty stands in the Peg for both week one and two.

Just How They Drew It Up! One more on Winnipeg and the Blue Bombers are ecstatic with the way Drew Willy has come firing out of the gates. The question I have is it his talent or the scheme that is making him successful?
Can The Riders Sink The Boatmen? Check out the predictors thoughts on tomorrow’s game at the Rogers Centre. The biggest key in my mind is whether or not the Riders can run the ball if so it could be a long day for the Argos defence.

More Football: If you are looking for some excellent football this weekend be sure to check out the Western Women’s Canadian Football League Championship game tomorrow night at Griffiths Stadium as they host Lethbridge.

Even More Football: The Football Canada Cup will also kick off this weekend at Griffiths. CFL stars of tomorrow from across the country will compete in this annual tournament. It will be a blast!

Under Par: The athletes on the Canadian PGA Tour were outstanding on Day One of the Dakota Dunes Open 9-under was the best score on opening day, however, as one golfer told me that dependant on the weather the course can play completely differently from day-to-day little lone hour to hour.

The Imports: The CHL held their annual import draft on Wednesday. The flawed system that is generally run by player agents took a step towards credibility as a pair of teams, primarily the Sarnia Sting took the best player available as opposed to the player that they could negotiate a good enough deal with to play for them. At the end of the day the CHL really has to figure out a way to make the import draft more equitable. The ban on trading picks actually saw a pair of WHL pass on their first round selections. To me not being allowed to swap picks is a huge detriment to smaller market teams where they cannot afford the financial opportunities that can be fiscally managed by larger market teams. Therefore those draft picks could remain a commodity and something that they could use as leverage in obtaining more North American players.

When The Going Gets Tough… The Toronto Blue Jays bats seem to get going. For whatever reason the Jays just cannot seem to get clutch hitting from their big guys when they really need it. Opening up a series in Oakland last night, the Jays got off to an early lead but could not overcome a young pitcher. Jays manager John Gibbons afterward stated that they were outplayed. To my way of thinking that is an effort and preparation issue that falls on his shoulders. Wonder if the Jays can make a deal or shake things up enough to salvage a play-off spot if not the East Division title.

And Just For Kicks: The World Cup of Soccer continues with the semi-finals set for today… Ooops I stubbed my toe and will be unable to finish this thought. However, give me a penalty kick and I’ll be fine!

And that is some of Dis N’ Dat on this Friday morning… Enjoy the weekend! Now where is that miracle water to cure my toe!
