Skys Clear, Green Flag Drops At ACMS

Racing Top Stories

The weather finally relented, though not until the last minute, and we managed to get a full night of racing in Saturday at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway. With almost a month of rain outs, drivers were anxious to hit the track and lay down some rubber.

Drivers from Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba and Montana descended on Saskatoon to kick off the Dakota Dunes Western Canada Super Late Model Championship Series season with an exciting Old Dutch 150 race where it was still anybody’s race right down to the wire. The mini stocks showed that even with limited racing this year they are already improving and there will be several challengers for the top spots, and the pro trucks rounded out the night with an exciting, as always, 40 lap feature.

Afternoon rain cancelled the second practice for the Dakota Dunes late models, but that didn’t stop Jim Gaunt from peeling around the track in the #55 Sky Financial Mortgage Machine Impala SS at a time faster than the local track record at 14.192 seconds. Unfortunately for Jim this does not move his name to the track record chart as this was not a local WSSL division race. Ryan Wells, pulling all the way from Hingham Montana timed in second at 14.210 seconds and Dusty O’Connell from Lloydminster was third fastest at 14.392 seconds in Doug Fisher’s #99 Big Bore Drilling Chevy.

Three races in the Kreepy Kritterz Mini Stocks, three different winners.
Robin Boomsma took home the heat race in the #95 CnR Motorsports Neon.
Jamie Tataryn was first in the qualifier race in the #41 Streetwise Racing Neon and the Feature winner was Shawn Magee in his #4 St. Solo Racing Prelude. Jamie was second and Robin rounded out the top three.

The FFUN Motor Group Pro Trucks were in the same boat with five races and five different winners. The first heat race was won by Ken Ross in the #67 Grace Beyer ReMax Chevrolet Silverado. Darnell Schick took the lead early in the second heat and continued on to the win in his #7 NexGen Mechanical Toyota Tundra.

Alex Leschenko driving a Ford this year took the win in the first pro truck qualifier with the #01 Family Pizza F150. Winner of the second qualifier race was Aaron Anderson, piloting the #19 Ens Auto Group Toyota Tundra to the checkered flag.

The final race of the night, the FFUN Motor Group 40 lap feature saw the
#12 Great Canadian Oil Change Dodge Ram pick up the commemorative Auto Clearing checkered flag, getting to the line ahead of #51 Luck Haukaas and the #19 of Aaron Anderson.

The #38 of Dave Bone picked up the first win of the season in the Dakota Dunes series, winning the first heat ahead of #88 Jason Gervais and #0 of Tony Lambert. #51 Nick Jewel took the second heat ahead of #36 Les Harding and #5 Ryan Wells.

In the Old Dutch 150, Ryan Wells took over the lead in lap 50 and led all the way home. Jim Gaunt challenged Wells several times but just could not complete the pass. With four laps remaining Dusty O’Connell finally worked his way past Gaunt and set his eyes on Wells. Despite several attempts it was clear Dusty just didn’t have enough left in his car and he had to watch as the #5 of Ryan Wells from Hingham Montana won the first Dakota Dunes series race of the year, the Old Dutch 150.
Dusty O’Connell was second in the #99 Big Bore Drilling Chevrolet and Jim Gaunt was third in the #55 Sky Financial Mortgage Machine Impala SS.

Next racing action at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway is Tuesday and Wednesday July 15 and 16 with the two day NASCAR Canadian Tire Series event. Tuesday will see the Brock Salvage street stocks challenge the Wes Skakun Memorial, the WSSL Super Late Models will be running to claim the Saskatoon Motor Products Bryce Mann Memorial and the Pro Trucks will be running the inaugural FFUN Motor Group 100.

Wednesday action kicks off in the afternoon, with the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series taking on the Bay Crop Science Velocity Prairie Thunder 250. Front gates open at 5:30 pm on Tuesday and 12:00 noon on Wednesday.

Don’t miss the action!
