Sask Drought Continues

2013 WHL playoffsThe WHL champion will not be from Saskatchewan for a 20th straight season. The province’s last hope, the Swift Current Broncos, were eliminated from the play-offs last night.

Calgary scored a 3-1 victory over the Broncos in game five of their series to eliminate them from the post season. Hitmen goaltender Chris Driedger was outstanding in the series posting a GAA of 1.91 and a save percentage of .942. Calgary appears to be headed towards a second round match-up with Red Deer, pending the outcome of the Edmonton/Kootenay set.


In other play-off action last night, Spokane’s Blake Gal scored 5:10 into extra time to lift the Chiefs to a 4-3 victory over host Tri-City. Spokane now leads the series 3-1.

Meanwhile, Kamloops’ Dylan Willick scored with 2:13 left in the first overtime to give the Blazers a 5-4 win at Victoria. Kamloops now has a 3-1 strangle hold on that series.


In the Prairie Junior Hockey League, the Saskatoon Royals opened their best-of-seven league championship series with a 7-4 win over Pilot Butte.
