M.H. QB MVP Of Hilltop Camp

An interrupted Ice Fishing trip may have landed the Saskatoon Hilltops a real good quarterback.

Medicine Hat’s Kevin Chopek was on an ice fishing trip when he got a call from Hilltop Head Coach Tom Sargent inviting him to the Toppers spring camp.

Three-and-a-half months later and the freshman quarterback was named the Rookie-MVP of the camp.

Sarge says he was impressed by what he saw particularly in his demeanor and command of the huddle.

However, it isn’t a slam dunk that Chopek will be with the Hilltops when they open main camp in August as he will work out for three British Columbia based teams this week.

Meantime, a total of 123 players took part in the five work-outs held over the weekend. Sargent knows with more than a dozen starters gone from last season that his team will have a new look to it which he says is exciting.

Following the three day camp the Hilltops paired their roster down to about 70 which is the number that they will head into main camp with in August.

The work isn’t done though as Sargent charged his team with getting into better physical condition for camp in August and admitted that there are still a number of starting jobs open.
