Hats Off to Hillis

Football Huskies Top Stories

Mitch Hillis made the most of his return to the Saskatchewan Huskies lineup, while Calgary’s Jack McEwen and Alberta’s Brent Arthur also had big games over the weekend, as the trio were named Canada West football players of the week Monday.

Hillis, who missed the last three games with injury, made a big impact for Saskatchewan in his return, racking up 175 receiving yards on 10 receptions. The Saskatoon, Sask. native hauled in a pair of touchdowns in the Huskies’ 40-10 win over the No. 10 UBC Thunderbirds to claim the conference offensive player of the week award.

On the opposite side of the ball, Calgary defensive lineman Jack McEwen is the conference player of the week after registering 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble in a 63-6 win over the Manitoba Bisons.

McEwen’s performance helped push the No. 5 Dinos to 5-1 on the season and into sole possession of first place with just two weeks left in the regular season.

Rounding out the players of the week is Alberta’s Brent Arthur, who kicked the Bears to their first win of the season on Saturday, with a surprising 19-18 win over the No. 4-ranked Regina Rams.

The Alberta kicker was a perfect 4-for-4 on field goals, including his 26-yard game winner with just 18 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Arthur’s honour makes him the first winner of a weekly award this season for the Golden Bears.
