Happy Hilltop Bus

The Saskatoon Hilltops longest road trip of the season was a happy ride home in more ways that one.

The Toppers scored 24 points in the third quarter, with the wind at their backs, and went on to outscore the Rifles 44-19 at Investors Group Field in Winnipeg.

The Toppers were lead offensively by running back Wayndel Lewis who carried the ball 26 times for 174 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Meanwhile through the air Jared Andreychuk went 11-for-21 with 217 yards passing and a pair of touchdowns. Evan Kopchinski was the top pass catcher hauling in four passes for 155 yards.

The victory moved the Hilltops record to 5-and-2 on the season and guaranteed them of at least a second place finish in the Prairie Football Conference and home-field advantage in the PFC semi-final.

The good news wasn’t over, however. As the Toppers were boarding the bus news came down that the Edmonton Huskies were leading Regina late in the fourth quarter. The Thunder would respond and send the game to overtime where the teams would exchange field goals and end the game in a 27-27 tie.

That tie means that the Hilltops are alone in first place in the PFC and with a victory in their regular season finale on Sunday against the Edmonton Wildcats can clinch first place and home field advantage throughout the play-offs.

Meanwhile, the single point in the standings for the Huskies makes for a very interesting weekend as Winnipeg, Calgary, and the Wildcats all enter their final games tied with six points while the Huskies have five. Basically, it will be a win and your into the post season scenario for all four teams in their final games of the season which will make for a very interesting Saturday and Sunday.
