Fast Friday At WGR

Racing Top Stories

You know autumn is just around the corner when Rock 102’s Show & Shine Weekend rolls around, with the school countdown on. Friday was a perfect race day though, sunny skies, 21, 22 degrees. Race fans responded and a good crowd was on hand for a great night of racing.

Event #11 at the Wyant Group Raceway saw the Golf’s Car Wash Mini Stocks, the Tiger Automotive Pro Trucks, the CrimeStoppers Bandoleros and the WSSL Auto Parts Super Late Models all taking the track.

The walls were eating up mini stocks Friday night. In the first heat race, Cameron Nixey took the #22 Focus into the outside wall. Repairs continued through the qualifier race, but the car was back on the track for the feature. Not up to speed, but it made the race.

Riley Surcon suffered the same fate in the qualifier race, hitting the inside wall hard. The damage to his #72 Nissan was beyond track repair though and he didn’t make it out for the feature.

Shawn Magee picked up the first heat and the Golf’s Car Wash Feature flag in his #4 Tommy Guns Original Barbershop Honda Prelude. Jim Barnsley’s #41 Streetwise Service Neon picked up the qualifier win. The
#23 of Cole Nixey was second in the Feature and Jim Barnsley was third.

There was tight racing all night in the Tiger Automotive Pro Trucks. A few surprises too as Bill Zubrecki, who was plagued with problems a couple of weeks ago took the heat race in his #18 Bugsy’s Bar & Grill Silverado.

Brennan Kirton brought his A game, hanging on to win both the qualifier race and the Tiger Automotive Pro Truck Feature in his #92 Cervus Equipment Silverado. The #1 of Alex Leschenko was second in the feature and #19 Aaron Anderson was third.

In the CrimeStoppers Bandoleros, the rookie #25 of Hayden Hoogeveen held off Cale Heilman to win the heat race. Ryley Schneider won the qualifier race in his #93 AGI Insurance Brokers Camaro.

The CrimeStoppers Bandolero Feature was a challenge right down to the finish, with Sam Howlett holding off Hoogeveen in his #12 Neufeld Building Movers Bando. The #21 of Dakota Wollf was third.

The headline show for the night was the WSSL Super Late Models, with many cars still hurting from their WSA race in Edmonton last week. PJ Kondra, Dave Bone and Rob Janzen didn’t have their cars ready and Kenny Heintz was running with a bad clutch so couldn’t complete each race.

Jared Reddekopp was ready though and took the first heat win in his #97 Razor Heating and Air Conditioning Impala SS.

Matthew Shirley was also ready, after driving his ass off to a third place finish in Edmonton last week, captured both the qualifier race and the WSSL Auto Parts Rock 102 Feature in his #12 Saskatoon Co-op Chevy SS. Andrew Hardy was second in the Feature in his #15 D&S Homes Challenger and Jared Reddekopp was third.

We’re back on the track next weekend with racing Saturday night. The Shell V-Power Nitro Sportsman division invitational takes place as the run the Race for the Cure charity race. Each year the Sportsman drivers raise thousands of dollars for cancer research and bring smiles to the faces of hundreds of children.

The Legends are here for their second Western Cup race, and both the Golf’s Car Wash Street Stocks and the Tiger Automotive Pro Trucks run their second last races of the season.

Racing is Saturday, August 26 with the front gates open at 5:00. First green flag is at 6:05pm
