Its Friday

Well here we go with another look back at the week that was in sports…

We’ll start in the WHL play-offs… The Saskatoon Blades just can’t escape the criticism… Despite the fact that it’s been 8 days since the Bridge City Bunch were eliminated from the post season the bad taste of a four game loss to the Medicine Hat Tigers came back when the Kelowna Rockets (The Western Conference’s second seed) were able to erase a 3-nothing series deficit… While the accomplishment was historic, becoming only the second team in WHL history to erase that deficit, one has to wonder how much gas the Rockets will have in the tank. A handful of Kelowna’s players have various ailments and will more than likely start the series in the press box. Add that to the fact that the by the time game four in their series with Kamloops is played the Rockets will have played 6 games in nine nights. Fatigue could come be a huge factor in this series.

Meanwhile, Blades players will begin returning to the Bridge City this weekend as they prepare to open what GM and Head Coach Lorne Molleken called a training-camp like atmosphere around the rink.

To the NHL and this shortened season is winding down with most teams having a dozen of games (or fewer remaining). That lead up to Wednesday’s trade deadline. Hard to pick who the winners were but you have to like Pittsburgh’s acquisition of Jerome Iginla, Douglas Murray and Brendan Morrow. While, Boston did well to land Jaromir Jagar and Columbus getting Marion Gaborik may provide an important building block for the future…

The losers, however, I think are Calgary and Vancouver. The Canucks were unable to move Roberto Luongo and his massive contract and improve their team that seems to be floating at times this season. Adding to the Canucks misery was Luongo coming out after the trade deadline and stating that, “my contract sucks.” Not exactly adding to his value on the trade market this summer! With all that being done I can’t imagine the Canucks getting anything of value for Luongo which may bring them to a point where the Canucks will either have to buy Luongo out and eat a huge amount of money, OR perhaps GM Mike Gillis will investigate trading Corey Schneider who may have much more upside and definitely an easier contract to deal with. Either way Gillis signed Luongo to the deal that both now need to find a way out of.

Meanwhile in Calgary GM Jay Feaster announced, after trading Jerome Iginla, and  Jay Bouwmeester and hearing that Mikka Kiprusoff plans to retire at season’s end, that ownership expects him to make the post season next year. My question is with what???? Good luck with that Jay.

Lastly, the Saskatchewan Roughriders are in Florida this weekend taking part in an “optional” work out. A number of rookies were rained out of a workout on Thursday, however, the hope is that the weather will improve for the weekend and the reporting of the veterans. While the event is closely monitored by the CFLPA here’s hoping the team can get the work in so that they can hit the ground running when training camp opens the first week of June here in Saskatoon.

That’s it for now! Talk to you later!

Dave
