Blades Return Home: Game Day Preview

The Saskatoon Blades are back on home ice tonight as they finish off a post-holiday home and home with the Prince Albert Raiders tonight. Last night the two teams met in Prince Albert, meeting for the fourth time this season.

Last Game Recap

The Saskatoon Blades saw their losing streak slide to 12 as they fell 5-2 last night in Prince Albert. The Raiders jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the second period, getting goals from Reid Gardiner (2) and Darcy Zaharichuk in the first 8:23 of the frame. An Ayrton Nikkel goal got Saskatoon on the board late in the frame before the teams went back and forth on the scoreboard in the frame. Shane Danyluk and Jayden Hard rounded out the scoring for the Raiders while Chase Clayton scored the Blades second goal at 11:21 of the third. In net, Troy Trombley made 36 saves for Saskatoon.

2013-14 Season Series

Tonight’s game is the fifth of the season between these clubs. So far the season series is as follows:

September 20th – Raiders 6 – Blades 1 – Collin Valcourt scored the Blades goal; Troy Trombley stopped 12 of 12 shots

September 21st – Blades 5 – Raiders 6 – Collin Valcourt, Brett Stovin, Matt Revel had 3 points each

November 12th – Blades 1 – Raiders 4 – Logan Harland scored the Blades goal; Alex Moodie stopped 42 shots

December 27th – Blades 2 – Raiders 5 – Ayrton Nikkel and Chase Clayton scored; Troy Trombley stopped 36 shots

Rivals Swing A Deal

While meeting on the ice last night, the two teams also took the time to announce a trade. The Blades acquired 1993-born defenceman Dylan Busenius along with 2nd and 5th round selections in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft. In exchange for the package, the Blades dealt 1993-born left-winger Collin Valcourt and 1995-born defenceman Ryan Coghlan to the Raiders. Busenius is currently in his 5th WHL season after being the 16th overall selection in the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft by the Medicine Hat Tigers. The product of Sherwood Park currently has 6 goals and 13 points to go along with 34 PIMs in 35 games in 2013-14.

Hebig Heads East On Team West

Saskatoon Blades forward Cameron Hebig is set to represent Team West at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. The event features the top 1997-born players from around the world. The Saskatoon-product was the Blades first selection in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft, being taken in the 3rd round, 56th overall. The event is being held in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia from today until January 5th, 2014.
