Banner Night For Saskatoon Aces:

Hockey Top Stories

With the minor hockey season quickly winding down so too are the city and provincial championships.

In Bantam A action, it was a second consecutive barn burner as the Saskatoon Black Aces squared off with the Red Wing Machine in a winner takes all contest for the city championship. 24-hours earlier the two clubs played a 3-2 overtime thriller that saw the Red Wings force the deciding game, last night.

The Aces, like the previous night, jumped out to an early 1-nothing lead thanks to a first period tally by Ethan Serfas. The two teams then traded chances back and forth with the Aces taking a 2-1 lead into the third period.

In the final frame, with the Aces clinging to the lead the Red Wings would find the equalizer 6-and-a-half minutes into the period. Flashback to Monday and the Red Wings forced extra time with a goal in the final minute before going on to the 3-2 win. Back to last night and the Red Wings would go on the Power Play shortly after notching the equalizer but this time the Aces P-K would come up big and keep the game tied. That is how regulation time would end.

Move to sudden-death and again the teams would trade opportunites to end it and claim the city title. However, at the 2-27 mark of overtime Brandon Von Hagen, who was outstanding in both championship games, would find the net giving the Aces the 3-2 win and the city championship.

The season isn’t done, though, for the Black Aces who are also competing for a provincial championship. The Aces opened that final home-and-home series against Regina with a 6-1 win last weekend. That series will be decided this weekend.

Congratulations again to the entire Black Aces team on a fantastic season.
