Week 3 CFL Power Rankings

There weren’t a lot of surprises in week 3 of the Canadian Football League. The two story lines that stuck out for me was the Saskatchewan Roughriders domination of the Toronto Argonauts and how bad the Montreal Alouette offence looks. The one card of sympathy this week goes out to Edmonton who were forced to play in back-to-back monsoons. This time they couldn’t pull out a win dropping a tight decision to a division rival in the BC Lions… As they say the show must go on, though. So, here are my CFL rankings! Feel free to discuss and disagree!

1 – Saskatchewan Roughriders (3-0 LW: 39-28 win @ Toronto)  – (Last Week Rank #1)

Fresh From the Water Here’s Today’s Top 10

Live from the lake here’s another ten things that are making me go hmmmm from the last week in the world of sports.

10 – The Saskatchewan Roughriders continue to Ride. The Green and White are off to the identical 3-and-oh start from a year ago. This time the team appears to be much more even keeled as opposed to the 2012 roster. The veterans that GM Brendan Taman brought in really seem to have brought a lot of stability to Riderville.

9 – The only concern I have with the Green and White is the long pass that they seem to be prone to give up at least once if not twice a game. The Rider ‘D’ is going to have to get this cleaned up in short order.

Two Riders Named POTW

Saskatchewan Roughriders Kory Sheets and Renauld Williams have each been named a CFL Gibson’s Finest Player of the Week.

Sheets was named Offensive Player of the Week following last Friday’s record setting performance. The second-year Rider had 26 rush attempts and two touchdowns on his way to a career single game high of 178 yards. He also added two receptions for 21 yards.

His 442 rushing yards is a CFL record after the opening three weeks of any season.

Swede Deal For Hilty

Saskatoon Blades trainer Steve ‘Hilty’ Hildebrand is set to join Team Canada for the upcoming 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Hildebrand has been named as one of two equipment managers for Team Canada at the event, which takes place in Malmö, Sweden from December 26th, 2013 until January 5th, 2014.

For Hildebrand, it will be his 4th time representing Team Canada and his 3rd time at a IIHF World Junior Championship.  He was the trainer for Team Canada at the Under-18 Ivan Hlinka Tournament in the Czech Republic in 2002.  His two appearances at the IIHF World Junior Championships came in 2003 in Halifax and in 2010 in Saskatoon.

Fast Night In The Books At Auto Clearing Motor Speedway. More to Come Tonight

The weatherman was not kind to race fans again this weekend, pushing Saturday’s racing to Sunday afternoon.  This not only is hard on race teams, but it eats into the time volunteers at the speedway had set aside to prepare the track for this week’s NASCAR Canadian Tire Series two day event.

The delay certainly didn’t affect the quality of the racing.  Scott Barrand was clearly here to race as he took first in the PartSource Mini Stock Division heat race and his first feature checkered flag ever, in the PartSource Mini Stock Feature with the #1 Tailgatorz Sports Bar Saturn.  Tristan Ransom claimed the win in the mini stock qualifier, taking the #13 Saskatoon Sports Bar Club BMW over the line first.

Tim Kammer had his #04 New Holland Monte Carlo firing on all the right cylinders as he took home checkered flags in the Midwest Combustion Sportsman heat race and Feature race.  Alex Leschenko took the checkered in the qualifier, driving Bob Gibson’s #11 Grand Prix.

Some More of Dave’s Dis N’ Dat

Dave’s Dis N’ Dat To Wrap Up The Work Week!

Starting with something completely irrelevant to sport… Is anyone else feeling used in Saskatoon? Wednesday one gas station as a show of customer appreciation decided to lower their price at the pump by five cents a litre. BUT low and behold at least three other major companies followed suit and lowered their price the same five cents on Wednesday. Then on Thursday those companies not only went back up the five cents but increased it another five cents a litre. Can’t tell me there isn’t a little price fixing going on!!! Geesh, want my vote in the next federal/provincial/civic election? Address the issue!

Speaking of feeling used

Holy Sheets Big Win: Durant Hurt:

The Saskatchewan Roughriders continued their blazing start to the 2013 season, defeating the Toronto Argonauts 39-28 for their third-straight win on Thursday night.

Darian Durant was exceptional, connecting on 14 of his 19 passes for 245 yards and 3 touchdown passes before leaving the game in the fourth quarter with an apparent lower-body injury.

Drew Willy stepped in as his replacement and finished the game.

Kory Sheets was also dominant, recording his third-straight 100-yard game on the ground, running for 178 yards and 2 touchdowns on 26 carries. It marked the first time a Roughrider running back had accomplished the feat since Wes Cates did so back in 2006.

Smith, meanwhile, hauled in 3 passes for 141 yards and 2 touchdowns.

After the Argos offence had a rough outing against BC in Week 2, collecting only 249 total yards, the unit got off to a hot start in this one.

Saskatoon To Upgrade Its’ Field Of Dreams

If you build it they will come.

Well not quite. In Saskatoon we have Gordie Howe Bowl. The facility has come under harsh criticism over the last number of years and is even being deemed as unsafe.

The Bowl, home to the Saskatoon Hilltops and High School football in the city is in major need of a renovation. Luckily, a group of community minded people unveiled a plan on Thursday morning to upgrade the facility and ensure it’s viability for generations to come.

Greg Yule caught up with me during last week’s Roughrider broadcast to talk about the Friends of the Bowl.
